When taking plaquenil which tests should periodically be taken

Plaquenil is also known as a treatment for malaria, a blood-borne parasite spread by mosquitoes in many tropical and sub-tropical environments. The usual dose is between one and two tablets per day (200 to 400 mg per day). When Plaquenil works, most patients start to feel improvement after 8-12 weeks. When patients start Plaquenil, doctors usually have them try it for 3 months before they assess the patient to determine if it is working.

Hello all, I am currently new to this site and ran across the discussion about stopping Plaquenil. I have been taking Plaquenil for about 8-9 months and thought that it was not helping me because I still have a fair amount of joint pain, fatigue, muscle pain and so many other issues. In 2002, the American Academy of Ophthalmology AAO established ocular examination guidelines for screening patients on Plaquenil therapy. Testing included a comprehensive eye exam that consisted of an assessment of the posterior segment with careful evaluation of associated macular changes or signs of retinal disease. 4 Baseline fundus. Plaquenil can damage the retina of the eye. This can lead to blindness. This problem is most common when high doses are taken for a long time. If you will be taking Plaquenil for a while, it is recommended to have a thorough eye exam before starting it and every three months while taking it.

Plaquenil is considered to be pretty safe, but it can rarely damage the eyes. If it isn’t working at all after this time then it is usually stopped.
