    Eye exam when taking plaquenil

Hi Jennie, I just get an annual check and advise the optician that i'm on plaquenil and other meds and ask them check that there is no deterioration to my retinas when doing my eye test. I have had a dye put in on two occassions and to date other than light sensitivity due to other conditions i have had no deterioration or increase in my prescription in 14 years.

Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes. I was told from the start by my rheumatologist I would have to have eye exams including visual field exams every six months due to the plaquenil therapy. My first two exams did include these tests. But my next six month appointment is coming up, and they told me I didn't need the visual field test this time so the appointment would be shorter. Older adults may require more frequent eye exams while taking this drug to monitor for signs of vision damage. For children This drug can be dangerous to children. Accidentally swallowing even 4.

I wear varifocals and have done for years but my night vision is appalling, very blurred with or without my glasses. I have heard of one other person whose eyes were effected by the Plaquenil, and they had to come off it and the eyes did improve. To my knowledge the chances of anything occuring are remote and I have not encountered anyone who has had a problem due to plaquenil. I have got an opthalmologist appointment at the hospital on the 14th of this month because in the last 6 months I have noticed problems with my eyes, whether it is the plaquenil or not is yet to be discovered.

Plaquenil is a pretty widely used drug so I figure she should have an opinion on it. I would feel more comfortable having the baseline exam done first BUT I am pretty eager to get started on it ASAP as my eye is starting to bug me due to the morphea that is slowly spreading. Ancillary Tests Plaquenil can prove toxic to the retina, threatening the vision. Regular eye examinations are essential for those patients taking plaquenil because over time the retina can become damaged beyond repair. Regular medical monitoring is the only way to ensure that toxicity is not occurring.

Unmet needs in rheumatoid arthritis Arthritis Research. Until the pathophysiology/etiology of rheumatoid arthritis RA is better understood, treatment strategies must focus on disease management. Early diagnosis and treatment with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs DMARDs are necessary to reduce early joint damage, functional loss, and mortality. Several clinical trials have now clearly shown that administering appropriate DMARDs early yields.
