    Plaquenil immunosuppressive therapy

My husband has been taking Plaquenil (generic hydroxychloroquine) for almost 2 yrs., under a rheumatologist's care. He became very ill, and was diagnosed w/ viral meningial encephalitis. We were much later told that the Plaquenil had "lowered his tolerance to infection, as it is also an immuno-suppressant." In essence, the medicine allowed the viral infection to cross the barrier between his brain and blood/lungs.

Aug 02, 2010 1. Yes, Plaquenil suppresses the immune system. Autoimmune disease such as Sjogrens occurs when the body gets "confused" and attacks healthy tissue instead of just attacking the germs. Basically, the immune system is a bit out of control. Plaquenil works by suppressing the immune system. From a technical point of view plaquenil is an immunosuppressant, however, from a medical point of view it is definitely NOT considered as one as its action is so light as to be insignificant in that respect. Cellcept may also cause a reduction in the number of certain cells in your blood. A reduction in your white blood cell count could increase your chance of infection. As with other immunosuppressive medications, it is important that you try to avoid infection and notify your doctor at the first sign of illness.

(He was never told of that risk when he was put on the medication.) Added : What I failed to mention (above) is that he almost died in April when this happened. His/our question is as to whether he can or should EVER go back on the medication and risk exposure to further illnesses if it is true that Plaquenil or the generic for is, in fact, an immuno-suppressant and presents a serious health risk for him?

Sarcoidosis, the most common indications for therapy are ocular and lung disease. Although experience is limited, it should be considered as an alternative for patients who can-not tolerate methotrexate. It is recommended for the first three months of therapy patients have monthly CBCs. For patients who experience severe toxicity from leflunomide, Cyclophosphamide Cytoxan® is a potent immunosuppressive agent that is reserved for severe cases of refractory rheumatoid arthritis and those with manifestations such as vasculitis. It is used in the treatment of other autoimmune conditions including lupus and vasculitis. Published evidence says that it is mediated by T-lymphocytes. Plaquenil is an anti-inflammatory drug approved by the FDA for malaria, lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis. It has an effect on T-lymphocyte mediated inflammation, making it a logical choice for a treatment trail for alopecia areata.

Vitamins with plaquenil and pred. DailyStrength I have only recently started plaquenil and wanted to make sure i was taking it right in order to get the best results. It can lower absorption by up to 50%! You also have to be careful of antacids etc as they have magnesium as an ingredient. I try and take plaquenil separate to everything now just in case.
