    Pct and hydroxychloroquine

Chloroquine has been extensively used in mass drug administrations, which may have contributed to the emergence and spread of resistance. It is recommended to check if chloroquine is still effective in the region prior to using it.

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel high-dose hydroxychloroquine regimen in patients with PCT. METHODS Sixty-five first episodes and 28 recurrent episodes of PCT were treated with hydroxychloroquine, 250 mg three times daily, for 3 days. The molecular weight of hydroxychloroquine sulfate is 433.95, and molecular formula is C 18 H 26 ClN 3 O. H 2 SO 4. Each hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablet intended for oral administration contains 200 mg of hydroxychloroquine sulfate equivalent to 155 mg base. In three subjects, hydroxychloroquine therapy was accompanied by changes in the urinary excretion of iron. The first four patients, followed up for nine to 24 months after treatment, all had relapse, and substantial porphyrinuria developed once more; cutaneous symptoms recurred in two of these.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend against treatment of malaria with chloroquine alone due to more effective combinations. In areas where resistance is present, other antimalarials, such as mefloquine or atovaquone, may be used instead.

Stopped Plaquenil due to recurrent infections - Inspire Nov 11, 2015 When I was started on Plaquenil 400mg it wasn't long until I caught a cold that turned into a chest infection. This was very rare for me. There was barely a day pass over the next 6 months when I wasn't sick and then needed antibiotics for chest infections and my GP thought it was related to the plaquenil but I needed to discuss it with my Rheumi.
