Hydroxychloroquine is a one of a number of drugs which have been used for many years in the treatment of malaria. Fortunately, it was discovered these drugs often are helpful in the treatment of various rheumatic diseases, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus SLE or "Lupus" and rheumatoid arthritis. About 3 months. In my opinion it’s not a very effective lupus drug unless your disease is very mild. New in the last 10 years is Benlysta, a monoclonal antibody. It’s expensive, but I was in the trial and saw great results with some patients. I'd like to report that I never have symtoms or flares anymore, but I do, but I think the Plaquenil makes the difference between being a sick person pre-plaquenil and a normal person who occationally feels sick. I was able to function again, as in go to work, after about a year and a half.

The United States Center for Disease Control provides updated guidelines and travel recommendations for the prevention and treatment of malaria in different parts of the world. It does not work against certain types of malaria (chloroquine-resistant).

My question is for those that have taken Plaquenil/Hydroxychloroquine. How long did it take for it to remove symptoms in your personal experience? I know I've read it can take up to 6 months but what I'm wondering is, do you just wake up one day and find it's kicked in 6 months down the road or more likely, it starts to work slowly over 6 months? PLAQUENIL TABLETS 2 Plaquenil should not be used in children over 6 years for long periods. Do not take Plaquenil after the expiry date printed on the bottle. It may have no effect at all, or worse, an entirely unexpected effect if you take it after the expiry date. Do not take Plaquenil if the bottle is damaged or shows signs of tampering. However, it does take many months for it to build to therapeutic levels in your body. My guess is that after only 12 days, you would not have seen any real effect from the plaquenil - it was probably a coincidence, and you just had a nice little spontaneous remission of symptoms for a while.
